Volunteering at FSG

The FSG Family

It takes around 450 volunteers to bring Formula Student Germany to life every year. The team of volunteer’s function like a well-oiled machine, tackling the ever-growing challenges of the annual event with honed skill and passionate dedication. The volunteers are divided into different groups according to their skill set. For example, there are the scrutineers, the judges, the “red shirts” and the “white shirts”. These are people who handle the many tasks of planning, organizing and running the event, as well as helping out and answering questions. The color of their shirt will tell you what their role is at FSG.

Volunteering @ FSG – Join the team

You can't get enough of Formula Student? Then join our amazing community of volunteers.

In 2022 the Formula Student Germany (FSG) event will be held for the 16th time in Hockenheim. This event is only possible with the amazing support of our large community of volunteers.

You can join our so called “Red Shirts” team, the Media Team or the team of Technical Inspectors.

Attending as Red Shirt

Red Shirts are the backbone of the event - without these helping hands we couldn’t hold a successful event. Through their infectious motivation and enthusiasm, the red shirts have a crucial impact on the unique spirit of Formula Student and make it a great experience for everyone.

Regardless if you are interested in founding a new Formula Student team at your university or you are a member of a team but didn't finish your car in time, if you have a car ready for competition but never made it past the waiting list, or you finished university and left your old formula student team but miss the Formula Student spirit. You are more than welcome to join out team of Red Shirts!

Attending as a member of the Media Team

Every year we are looking for ambitious photographers and videographers to capture our FSG moments. Our media team also includes a group of social media content creators.

General information

The event will take place from August 15th to August 21st 2022, while our volunteers start already on Sunday August 14th at lunchtime. In order to familiarize you with the different jobs and engage you throughout, it is required that you are able to attend during the whole event. Your job as Red Shirt ends on Monday 22nd at 14:00 after wrap-up.

You have the choice to either spend the nights in a hotel in double bed rooms or on the campground with all the other teams right next to the Hockenheimring. Both accommodations will be paid for you by Formula Student Germany and we provide you with food (our own culina) and beverages during the event days (camping equipment cannot be provided by us). Needless to mention, you will be invited to the big party on Sunday night as a special guest.

In case you only find time to volunteer during the weekend, we encourage you to apply as "weekend volunteer". For this, it is obligatory that you a) had been active in a FSG team before and b) that you are able to attend this years' event from Friday 18:00 till Sunday 21:00.

We expect you to be motivated, cooperative and reliable. The event language is English so it is mandatory that your English is fluent, but don’t worry if you are not a native speaker.

The event days could be long including some evening events. Our team works in the background and gets everything ready for the many participating teams, thousands of students, as well as guests and visitors. The team of volunteers is the glue which keeps everything together and the grease which makes it run smoothly.

And most importantly – it’s fun! Those of you who joined the FSG family before could tell and share their experience. You won’t regret your decision to join the event as Red Shirt or Technical Inspector at FSG 2022 in Hockenheim!

If you are interested in being a red shirt, then please login and fill out the application form.
If you are interested in being a Technical Inspector or part of the Media Team please send us a brief portfolio to ci.jobs(at)formulastudent.de.

The application deadline is March 31st, 2022.

In case we receive more applications than needed for this year’s event we will have to be selective, in which case we would prefer candidates with Formula Student experience. In any case we will let you know until Mid of May the latest.

Formula Student Germany is looking forward to welcoming you as part of the FSG family!

Red Shirts

The Red Shirts are responsible for event control and support. The support team takes care of building up and taking down of all the physical components that transforms the Hockenheim Ring into Formula Student Germany. They ensure that the event runs smoothly and act as the track marshals during dynamic events. Meanwhile, the event control team serve as intermediaries between visitors, team members, sponsors and press so that nobody on the FSG grounds gets lost or stranded. The Red Shirts are the largest group of volunteers at FSG and we are grateful that they can always be relied upon to overcome any challenges that might present themselves during the event.

Technical Inspection

The team of the technical inspection – the folks in green – are there to guarantee that all the vehicles are safe. They accomplish this by meticulously checking the cars for potential safety hazards and patiently assisting the teams with any technical problems (at the event and throughout the year). A team may not participate in the dynamic events without receiving the go-ahead from our green shirted volunteers.

Judges

Since FSG is in essence a design competition, a team’s scoring in the static disciplines is a deciding factor in its overall standing. It is the job of the Judges in their blue shirts to render these scorings. They look at the design, manufacturing quality and cost planning; they consider the economics of the project and whether the business plan is convincing. For this, they call on their professional expertise, indispensable honesty and constructive criticism. Their feedback has resulted in extensive improvements from the teams over the past years and helped countless students become better engineers and businessmen.

Media Team

Finally, we have the FSG Media Team, who exercise their skills, plans and creativity to contribute video and image materials of exceptional quality, which allows us to relive the funniest and most exciting moments of the event over and over again, long after the smoke from the tires of the race cars has cleared. The Media Team is also responsible for keeping fans up-to-date through our social media channels and entertaining us with witty commentary or interesting details. There’s so much action going on at Hockenheim, it’s great to have eyes everywhere, just in case you blink at the wrong moment!

IT Experts

Behind the scenes we have the IT Experts, who are tasked with timekeeping during the dynamic disciples as well as ensuring that all teams are given a fair and equal assessment. Not only this, but it is thanks to them that everyone at FSG can enjoy a highspeed Internet connection throughout the entire event site!

White Shirts

The White Shirts oversee the year-long task of planning the event and of ensuring that all the pieces of the puzzle fall into the right place on race day. They are the “go-to” people for sponsors, press, participants and visitors and they ensure that the competition runs without a hitch. They are engine behind the well-oiled Machine that makes Formula Student Germany possible. You might not see many of them, they are a rare breed, but together they have decades of experience and they enjoy putting their industrial experience to practice and bringing us together for the annual competition at Hockenheim!
